Limit summary length with onWidgetFormat

Last Updated: Feb 27, 2014 04:52PM PST

Do you find that some site editors are entering summaries well beyond a desirable word length? You can compose a shorter version of the summary, ellipsis in tow, with this small application module.

Once in place, this module creates a new short_summary widget format value, or allows you to replace the existing summary with a shortened version.

Find the code in this Gist:
Depending on which you choose, place this module in a folder called “short_summary” or “summary” in your LiveWhale backend /client folder and adapt it as needed.

This is just one example of how to modify widget variables (the values the will be inserted into a widget) prior to actual insertion. You can use similar means to alter any variable in any widget type, even limiting it to certain areas of the site, by person, ip address or any other factor available at the time of output.
